Debt Bondage

Debt Bondage Violence:

This provision is prescribed by section 342(1) of the Cameroon Penal Code which states that whoever subjects a person to debt bondage shall be punished with imprisonment for from 5 to 10 years and a fine of from 10,000 frs to 500,000frs.

Section 342(2) states that the penalties provided above shall be doubled if the offender is an ascendant, a guardian or a person having customary custody over the victim.

In section 342(3), whoever boards a person in debt bondage shall be punished with imprisonment for from 10 years and a fine of from 10,000frs to 1000,000frs.

The court in this case in section 342(5) may impose the forfeitures provided in section 30 of the Penal code which are but not limited to incapacity to be guardian, curator, deputy guardian committee or member of the family council. Women in most cases are victims of debt bondage.
